A Brief History of our Scholarships
The Statesboro Kiwanis Club was chartered in 1960 with 28 members. One of the objectives of the club was community service. One of the club's early community service projects was to assist deserving students who wanted to further their education beyond the high school level.
The Statesboro Kiwanis Club began to award scholarships and loans administered by the club Scholarship Committee. One of the first awards was a Future Vocational Teacher Scholarship in 1971. Eventually the club decided not to make any further loans available to individuals since a number of loans were outstanding, and the loans were very difficult to collect.
On April 7, 1981 the club gave a $2,000 grant to the Georgia Southern Foundation to use for scholarships to students in the School Of Nursing.
On September 13, 1984 the Statesboro Kiwanis Club signed an agreement with the Georgia Southern Foundation for the establishment of an endowment for scholarships with a goal of $50,000. The scholarships were to be available to students in all the different Schools and Colleges in the University. With ever increasing costs for books and tuition, the endowment was increased beyond its original goal. By 2008 the endowment had increased to a value in excess of $118,000 (not contributions but value).
The Georgia Southern Foundation has used the income from the endowment to award three $1,500 scholarships to worthy students annually for a number of years. Over 60 students have benefited from the endowment over the last 23 years.
In 2008 the Statesboro Kiwanis Club decided that the original endowment was sufficiently funded to be self sustaining. The club decided that they would establish another agreement with the Georgia Southern Foundation for a new scholarship. In the summer of 2008 the club made a donation of $10,000 to the Foundation for the new scholarship.
The Statesboro Kiwanis Club also awards three Memorial Scholarships of $1,500 annually to three worthy graduating high school seniors. These scholarships are funded directly from the Kiwanis Club budget.
The Statesboro Kiwanis Club Scholarship Committee is currently working on an agreement with Ogeechee Technical College to fund scholarships there.
A large number of deserving area students have benefited from the Statesboro Kiwanis Club scholarships since that first scholarship was awarded in 1971.
